Take It All In

The diverse scenes in Germany can make it feel daunting to decide what to tackle — do you dive into the vibrant, modern city scenes of Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin or are you in the mood for medieval castles or the picturesque landscapes of the Alps?

For those ready to experience Germany at its fullest, a taste of each is the best path. The unique architecture is a consistent draw, as is Munich’s annual Oktoberfest and the soccer stadiums dotting most cities and towns across the country. If you are looking for the ideal mix of cosmopolitan culture and natural beauty, Germany is tough to beat.

Delta flies to Berlin (BER) from New York (JFK), Munich (MUC) from Atlanta (ATL) and Detriot (DTW), and Frankfurt (FRA) from Atlanta, Detriot and New York. At Frankfurt Airport, the country’s busiest and one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs, Delta uses Terminal 2. The terminal is separated into concourses D and E, and visitors can use the SkyLine to transfer terminals if needed.

Frankfurt

Frankfurt's past is integral to its present. The Roemerburg, the old city center, was mostly destroyed in World War II. Since then, it has been rebuilt and remains Frankfurt's most distinctive neighborhood. Visit its cafés, shops and the cathedral around the square to soak up the uniquely-German architecture that inspires thoughts of gingerbread and fairytales.

Downtown Frankfurt is known for its cloud-reaching skyscrapers that rank among some of the tallest in Europe. The Main Building is open to the public, and travelers can ride a sleek elevator to the viewing platform and take in the city from what feels like the top of the world. If you're just looking to get a glimpse of the downtown setting, however, head over to the Main River Bridge, which offers the best view in town of the cityscape.

Mirroring its architecture, Frankfurt's food scene eclectically mixes the old and new. Menus at restaurants such as Haus Wertheym, which serves up traditional German fare, show that Germans love their schnitzel and spaetzle. And the new batch of hip, see-and-be-seen bars showcase the city's dedication to staying young and on the edge.

Munich

In Munich, modern conveniences and traditional Bavarian culture combine in a mix of old and new. The Bavarian capital is one of the most affluent cities in the world and pulls weight on the international stage that few cities its size can. While affluence, fed by the businesses sprouting from the city, creates a modern conveniences, the beer halls, lederhosen and Oktoberfest reveal the traditional Munich.

Despite the country's breadth, Germany’s weather is consistent between regions, characterized by its warm summers and relatively mild winters. Mountain regions see more cold weather. January is the coldest month, seeing average temperatures at 27 degrees Fahrenheit. July is the hottest month, with temperatures in the 60's and 70's.
